Meet Chris Thompson, Amber Co-Founder

Chris about to mountain bike down a volcano in Ecuador. As you do.

1. Why did you start Amber?

It just felt like it needed to exist. Back in 2018, we could see this massive acceleration in renewable energy happening in Australia, but everyday customers had no way to contribute to the change or to benefit from it. Once we realised that we could align customers with driving renewables by giving them access to wholesale prices we went about building a company to make that happen.

2. Describe your role today in a nutshell...

That’s a tough question as everyday is very different! But probably the thing that ties them together is that my role is to make sure that the whole company is focussed every day on solving our customers’ most important problems and improving their experience with us.

3. Tell us a bit about your background...

I’m a proud Kiwi, but moved to Australia when I was 10. Over my career I’ve had the opportunity to work with some of Australia’s largest businesses as a consultant with BCG, as well as the opportunity to build and run an eCommerce business in Iran, which we grew to over 400 employees.

4. What do you love about working here?

I love the mission and the impact we have for customers. But even more I love the opportunity to work with my amazing colleagues and try to solve problems everyday.

5. What’s been your most inspiring or proud moment?

One of my proudest moments so far came in March this year. There was a major fire at a gas generator in South Australia, which put the grid in SA right on the edge of major problems. But we were enabling our customers with batteries to export back into the grid to help keep the lights on for everyone - that felt pretty cool and wouldn’t have happened without Amber.

6. What’s been the most random or interesting fact you’ve learnt about the energy market?

The funnest thing about working in the energy market is that there’s always more to learn - there’s so many layers of complexity built up over decades. I’m not sure I could pick a favourite fact, there’s always a new one every day!

7. What do you like to do when you’re not working on getting Australia to 100% renewables and saving customers money on their energy bills?

I love getting outdoors and exploring the world.

8. What’s your vision for Amber in five years’ time?

Our vision for Amber is pretty clear. We want to help over a million customers to automate millions of devices in their homes and businesses so that they use power when its cheaper and greener. At that scale we’d be shutting down entire coal-fired power stations and replacing them with renewables and flexible demand.
